In 1877, Dr. Reed wrote an article entitled "A New Remedy," in that article he observed that several of his neighbors were using a preparation of the Saw Palmetto berry and recommending it for a variety of medical conditions. His article was published again in New Preparations, the July, 1879 edition. In that very same publication, a separate article written by Dr. I. J. M. Goss stated he had been encouraged to use the Saw Palmetto remedy and considered it a satisfactory one.
It was around this time that tonic makers began to include Saw Palmetto in many of their recipes for "staying well".
