Synthetic lycopene is being sold as a replacement for natural lycopene, one of these is being marketed under the name "LycoVit®". Some companies using this artificial lycopene in their products ARE NOT advising consumers that "LycoVit®" is a man made substance created by chemical giant BASF Corporation.
On April 11, 2002 BASF issued a press release titled, "GRAS STATUS DETERMINED FOR BASF SYNTHETIC LYCOPENE "
In this press release BASF announced that their synthetic lycopene had been determined to be "Generally Regarded As Safe." BASF's press release went on to say that their synthetic lycopene is "substantially similar to naturally occurring lycopene."
VitaPurity is concerned that this "substantially similar" chemical substitute is being marketed by companies other than BASF as genuine lycopene.
