"I see Omega-3 Fatty Acid supplements for as little as $5.98 per bottle. Why should I pay any more than that?"
Good question. There are countless inexpensive fish oil products on the market today that appear to offer the same health benefits as more expensive ones. The simple fact is ... THEY DON'T. There are potential health risks in taking low-cost, low-grade fish oil supplements. The higher levels of contaminants and toxins found in many low cost fish oils can actually damage your immune system. VitaPurity believes that nutritional supplements should help strengthen your body, not damage it.
There are three major grades of fish oil:
- LOWEST QUALITY - Cod Liver Oil;
- MEDIUM QUALITY - Health-Food Grade fish oil;
- HIGHEST QUALITY - Pharmaceutical Grade or Ultra-Refined fish oil.
What differentiates one from another is purity, contaminant levels and concentration of Omega-3 Fatty Acids. Lower grades of fish oil have less Omega-3 Fatty Acids and often contain high levels of impurities.
The level of contaminants in fish oil are determined by the size of the fish and where they rank in the food chain. Small fish (such as anchovies and sardines) have shorter life spans and are subsequently less prone to accumulate environmental pollutants. Larger fish such as salmon and mackerel are predatory species that have longer life spans, as a result, they contain higher levels of pollutants.
Fish Oil Grades and Standards:
Cod Liver Oil
This is the lowest quality fish oil since it has a low concentration of long-chain omega-3 fatty acids and contains the highest levels of contaminants (organic mercury, PCB's, and DDT). In addition, high-dose use of cod liver oil is not recommended due to the high levels of Vitamin A found in this form of fish oil. Although this is the most inexpensive form of fish oil, long-term use is very difficult because of these factors.
Health Food Grade Fish Oil
If the label says it comes from a particular species of fish (i.e. salmon, mackerel, tuna, etc.) then you know it is a health food grade fish oil. An average 1,000mg serving of health-food grade fish oil contains approximately 300mg of long-chain omega-3 fatty acids. The typical Supplement Facts per one capsule/softgel of health food grade fish oil would read, "180mg EPA and 120mg DHA".
Health-food grade fish oils are acceptable in small amounts (no more than two to three 1,000mg servings per day) without causing some stomach upset. Higher doses require a much more purified type of oil; Pharmaceutical Grade Fish Oil.
Pharmaceutical Grade Fish Oil
Pharmaceutical Grade fish oil is what you get in VitaPurity Ocean SplendorTM Omega 3 Fish Oil.
